  • It Can Get Messy: As a personal assistant, you must be willing to roll up your sleeves to assist in any way possible. Most job descriptions do explain that an individual must be flexible with their hours of availability and scope of duties, however, those duties can sometimes include things like cleaning up after the family dog, changing dirty diapers, and helping in the kitchen.
  • It Can Get TOO Personal: When you are working so closely with someone, involved in both their personal and professional lives, sometimes you may find yourself in situations that will challenge their sense of boundaries. A personal assistant needs to be able to know when to step back, even when their employer might insist otherwise. A good personal assistant is firm, fair, and uses their best judgment at all times.
  • You Have an Image to Uphold: You represent your employer in many different areas of their life. To their personal and professional contacts, you may be the first person many others meet or speak with. The mannerisms, polish, and professionalism of a personal assistant must be aligned with that of their employer – whether you intend it to or not, everything you do is a representation of the person you work so closely with.
